Share my story

We want to hear about your personal experience of caring for someone with a mental illness.
We want to know what has been helpful and what has been barriers and challenges to caring. This will help us advocate for mental health carers like you. Your story will let other carers know they are not alone.

How does it work?

You can tell your story in person or over the phone or you can write it down. You can be anonymous- sometimes a story needs to be told, but for personal reasons your name remains confidential.

People often tell us their story over the phone. One of the key questions we ask is "What is the key message of the story?" This statement often shapes the story telling as a whole. We then edit the story into 500 words and send it to you for changes and approval. It is then posted on our website!

Or you may decide to put pen to paper, We will read the story and edit it if needed. Sometimes we need to change names, or to make details more general of places or locations. Then you approve the changes and the story will be posted on our website.

Story requirements

You will be asked to provide some details about yourself (age, gender, state, first name),  who you care for, and what have been the barriers and enablers to caring. You can remain anonymous if you wish.
  1. Your story must be no longer than 500 words.
  2. Once submitted your story will be reviewed, edited, and sent to you for final approval.
  3. Once you have approved the final version it will be uploaded on the Our National Voice Project Page.
  4. Some people might find that thinking about their experiences makes them feel uncomfortable or upset. If this happens to you, please check out support page, where you will find ways of contacting people who can help you.
